Open Hearts - 2 Corinthians 5:16-20

2 Corinthians 5

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Questions for Reflection:

How does it change the way we look at people when we no longer see them from worldly point of view?

What does it look like for people to see in me the ministry of reconciliation? In other words for my life to reflect of message the reconciliation with the Father that Jesus has made possible?

How are the three metaphors of salt, light and now ambassadors (mentioned in yesterday's and today's posts) helpful in painting a picture of how God sends us into our world for His purposes?

Prayer of the Week:

Father, Son, Holy Spirit I am so excited that I get to live this day united to You in the very depth of my being. Thank you Jesus for reconciling me to my Father in heaven who loves me very much. Thank you Spirit for filling me afresh with the very presence of Jesus. I receive You now and consecrate myself to You and Your purposes for me this day. I am Yours and You are mine.

Jesus, I want to know You more today. I do not want to know You just in my mind and thinking but know You in my experience of today’s life. Your presence brings life and hope, joy and passion. I come to You Jesus and invite You into every crack and crevice of my being and every moment of my day. I surrender to You. Jesus, there are parts of my heart, soul, mind and body that simply need Your presence, healing and wholeness. I open myself and my story up to You in these moments of prayer and ask You to help me notice where in me … I need You today.

(Take a couple of moments of open reflections asking Jesus to reveal places in your heart, your schedule, your plans, your relationships… etc. that need His touch. As He shows you simply ask Him to meet you there.)

Jesus, I am amazed at Your love for me and all people. I love the idea of being Your ambassador, bringing the message of reconciliation with the Father, to the people around me, by what I say and do. I get to be salt and light in Your name. Jesus, with You living in me, I long to be fully present in my conversations and relationships today. I am so easily distracted toward lifeless, life-zapping things. I turn from those and ask You to graciously fill me with Your presence freeing me to be present ….. with Your Presence today. I get to see people, really see them today engaging them with an open heart. I get to pray for them and maybe even with them. I get to be fully present knowing You are working in and through me to bring Your Presence into their life.

Thank you for giving me this kind of adventure to live in Your name today!

Amen

Open Hearts - Matthew 5:13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Questions for Reflection:

Name at least three "lampstands" that you have in your life where your capacity to shine affects people.

What kind of encouragement do you need lots of to keep shining on your lampstand?

What do you think about the "no plan B" idea which was shared about this text?

Open Hearts - Matthew 9:35-38

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Questions for Reflection:

Do I consider myself part of “Team Jesus” in this harvest? Do I have open eyes to notice others? Do I even want to? On my own, probably not. Prayers like this week’s prayer points to the truth that it has to be Jesus In Me that gives me the desire to have open eyes and an open heart. Join me in asking the Holy Spirit to give us the gut-wrenching compassion to SEE others, say “HEY”, and PRAY!

I praise you Jesus for being so “open hearted” and “noticing me gracefully” even when I was dead in my brokenness and sinfulness. I am amazed at your “open hearted love for all people”. Jesus, I want to be as “open-hearted” as You are.

I am so very sorry that I often default to my old “sinful self” me when doing life which closes my heart to people especially when I feel, anxious, overwhelmed, angry, __________________ (fill in the blank with personal confession of any closed heartedness). When I am closed I don’t notice people gracefully … I do not love well… even those closest to me. I do not want my sinful self to take the lead and call the shots today. I now put off and renounce my old self in Jesus name!

Jesus, I now by faith, clothed in forgiveness, receive and put on my new life I have in You – my “Jesus in me” self – given to me in my baptism! Your heart in me opens me up to love people well. I want to practice today being “open hearted”. Lead me into opportunities all day to notice people – really see them with grace-filled eyes and respond gracefully. Help me bring unmerited favor in small and large quantities to whomever you lead me to today. I am your vessel bringing your grace today! The words of the apostle Paul seem so real right now, “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me.” Wow!

I specifically pray for Alpha which starts this week. Jesus, I open my heart to anyone you bring to mind for me to grace with an invite to Alpha. I trust Your grace for all the ways I will mess today up. I trust Your grace for all the ways You will work through me today as I notice people gracefully!

Amen

Open Hearts - John 9:1-11

1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” 10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked. 11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”

Questions for Reflection:

Where do you find yourself struggling to see people as real people with real people as children of God?

How is God calling you today to open your eyes to people around you?

Open Hearts - John 1:35-42

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas”

Questions for Reflection:

In what way does Jesus invite you into His life .... let you hang out with Him? Can we still do that or was that just for those disciples who were with Him back then?

Can you think of someone who you can be and "Andrew" to and what does it look like today to invite someone to meet Jesus? How could you pray about being and "Andrew"?

Prayer of the Week:

Open Heart - Luke 5:27-32

27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Questions for Reflection:

This account gives us a great opportunity to compare and contrast the open heart of Levi and the closed hearts of the Pharisees. What barriers to an open heart do you see in the Pharisees? Are these barriers people still struggle with today, particularly in the church?

What about Jesus do you think made Levi drop everything and follow Him? How can we have that same draw to Jesus?

Open Heart - Luke 8:40-48

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

Questions for Reflection:

Jesus takes time to make sure that the woman is noticed, and He even gives her the blessing of being called Daughter. How does this story possibly convict you to begin to notice and bless those who may be passed over?

How open to interruptions are you? While not all interruptions may be opportunities is your heart even open to the possibility of them being engineered by the Holy Spirit? What practices might you need to reengage in or start doing to create a more open heart?

Open Heart - Luke 19:1-10

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:1-10

Questions for Reflection:

How did getting "noticed" by Jesus change Zacchaeus's life? Short term and long term

What do you imagine it was about encountering Jesus that would move Zacchaeus to give up so much of his wealth?

How is this story messing with your head and heart as you encounter it?
