Read the following to help you prepare for the Lord's Supper!
CONNECTION is what the Lord’s Supper is all about! Jesus first began this celebration the night He was arrested, less than twelve hours before He would go to the cross. So, His words, “This is My body (bread) given up for you, This is My blood (wine) shed for you,” take on impacting relevance.
Jesus is present by His Spirit today with His followers - - - us! Today you will hear His same words spoken, “This is My body. This is My blood.” If you receive His body and blood today, you are saying to yourself, to God, and to all who are gathered here, that you believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, gave up His life on the cross for you personally.
That is a good thing! And, you are declaring that you have a personal faith relationship with Him through which He gives, and you gladly receive, forgiveness and life.
The following scripture passage is valuable as we “come clean” before with God and prepare to receive the Lord’s Supper. Enjoy His forgiveness and grace. Then, leave empowered to follow Him! I John 1:8-9 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Jesus is Present: Although some of our leaders distribute the bread and wine, this is Jesus’ meal. He is the host and through the metaphor of “eating” He is literally dwelling in us. His presence in us is food and drink for our souls.
Jesus Brings Gifts: Wherever Jesus is, His grace, truth, forgiveness, hope, and peace are abundant. As we receive Him, we receive all He has purchased and won for us. Believe it!
I Bring Real Life and Real Faith: When we come to the Lord’s Supper, Jesus desires nothing more than for us to come clean with Him about ourselves (our sins, wrongs, failures and regrets). It is not a time to hide from God! If He is tweaking something in your conscience that you know you need to come clean about, confess and turn to Him. Spend some time in prayer admitting all that to Him. Then come to Him with a real faith, trusting that He loves you just the way you are and calls you to receive complete forgiveness and restoration. Coming clean with God and receiving forgiveness that is offered in this celebration is indispensable for following Jesus.
I Connect with God and Others: While this is an intimate connection with God, Jesus also reminds us that He is the common denominator we share with each other as Christ followers. As we come to the Lord’s Supper, we recommit to treating each other as brothers and sisters in Christ and to love one another with the love of Christ.
