1.24.13 A breath of fresh air.

Welcome to Today's PoG Blog! "Heavenly Father, For You alone my soul waits hushed.  Open my eyes, and ears, and heart, and mind to Your Word, God. What do You want to say to me today, Pappa?  Amen."

Philippians 2:13-16a (the Message)

Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God Himself willing and working at what will give Him the most pleasure.

Do everything readily and cheerfully no bickering, no second-guessing allowed!

Go out into the world uncorrupted a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society.

Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God.

NASB version (among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the Word of Life.)

NIV version (in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold on to the Word of Life.)

Carry the light-giving Message into the night…

What are You saying to me today?  What are You saying to us – Your people at PoG – Your lights – as You teach us that we are “cities on a hill”  and “lights on a stand” – as You command us to SHINE ?

What does your day look like today – Thursday, January 24, 2013?

Are you fixing breakfast?  Will you drive through McDonalds? Are you a student?  Are you in high school or college? Are you going "back to school?" Are you a Teacher?  Do you work at Dell or Samsung or AMD? Are you unemployed?  Do you have an interview today? Are you exhausted from the worry of job hunting? Are you at home with your kids today?  Do you take care of other people’s children? Are you ill?  Will you be going to the Dr. today?  Are you in the midst of chemo or radiation? Is life exciting right now?  Boring?  Mundane?  Overwhelming?  Too hard? Will you stop by the store after work?  Will you run other errands to the bank?  Getting your hair cut? Are you facing a deadline or project or presentation? Are you around happy, upbeat, positive people today?  Are you around sad, defeated, depressed, negative people?

You get the drift.  Think about your life for just today.  And look at how God tells us to live right now. Turn it into a prayer…

“Today, Father, as I prepare for my day, help me to be energetic in my life of salvation. Not energy generated from myself – I am not able to keep this up by myself.  Fill me with You,   Your energy, God, an energy deep within me.  And, today, God, through my life today, I trust that You will be  willing and working at what will gives You the most pleasure.

Help me to do everything readily and cheerfully.   Ach.  Really?  Everything?  I don’t feel so cheerful.  I am not ready to face anything at all today – much less cheerfully.  But, that is Your will – and with Your energy in me I will try. You are telling me to go – go out into the world – but the world is dark – my day is hard – the people I work with are difficult, I am on my last dime, I am afraid, I am worried, I am angry.  Yet, You say, Go out into the world uncorrupted - a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Help me be a breath of fresh air.  Help me not to exhale more corruption and pollution.  Help me be a City on a Hill.  Help me be a Lamp on a Stand. Help me appear as a light in the world.  Help me to shine like a star in the universe as I carry Your light-giving Message.

I want to be a breath of fresh air – at home – at school – running late, stuck on IH35 - in the drive-thru, at Starbucks, at the dentist -  in a cubicle - on the golf course -, around negativity - around little children, around grown adults acting like little children – amidst chaos and fighting – while job searching – etc. etc.  (you fill in the blanks with your life today)

Let’s be a breath of fresh air today!   Let’ appear as lights in the world!  Let’s shine like stars in the universe as we carry God’s Light-Giving Message!

1.23.13 "Not perfect - just Overcomers!"

Today’s Scripture is:  Ephesians 5: 1-8New International Version (NIV)

Follow God’s example,(A) therefore, as dearly loved children(B) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(C) and gave himself up for us(D) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(E)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(F) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(G) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(H) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(I) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(J)—has any inheritance(K) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a](L) Let no one deceive you(M) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(N) comes on those who are disobedient.(O) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(P) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(Q)

On Sunday, Pastor talked about living a “contrast” life so people will see a difference in us.  This really stuck.  I think it’s true that in most outward areas of our lives, people far from God don’t see a difference in our behavior compared to worldly behavior.  Divorce rate among Christians is high,  many times the language we use is inappropriate, we get caught lying and cheating just like everyone else, we don’t always handle situations with Godly integrity, and we can be seen as judgmental or intolerant because of our beliefs.   So if we have a hard time reflecting Jesus in our behavior, how do we show people the light of Jesus and help them see that a life with Him is something to desire and something that will make a difference in their own lives?

Verses 3-7 above list some of the things that disappoint God in regards to our behavior.  The very things mentioned in these verses are things we have all done at some point in time - even as a Christian.  So when I first read this I had somewhat of a hopeless feeling.  A feeling like I can never measure up and never truly be a light for Him.   But I read it again from a “love” perspective - trusting God’s love for me - and saw these as warnings... things to stay away from...things to be aware of... God’s way of saying, “You will deal with all of these things at some point, but don’t partner with them, and overcome them”.

So, what if the difference maker here is the “overcoming” part?   What if when we make a mistake like a course joke, bad language, or impure words or actions - we recognize that sin, we apologize to those around us, and we make a diligent effort with God’s help to overcome those temptations and actions and we let them see our realness.  What if THAT is what makes us different to those far from God.  Not the perfection, but the honesty and authenticity of imperfection, and the grace and forgiveness and strength from God to overcome it, grow from it, and change it?  I believe that is what makes us different and reflects the Light of Jesus.

Verse 2 says to walk in the way of love.  Could it be, if in our everyday lives, we treat others with love and respect, and with authenticity admit our failures -  we would look different and attractive to this broken world?   Although our behavior may be an initial judgment on us from a non-Christian perspective, Jesus’ light will be seen through our desire to be more like Him - through our change - through our treatment of people - and through our openness as we let them see into our lives.

The last verse says that we are now light in the Lord and to live as children of light.  If we are Jesus followers, that light already lives in us... so it will be seen if we are open and authentic.

Lord, help me to walk in the way of Love.  Help me to see every situation through your eyes and to treat everyone with love and respect - in a world that has very little of that.  Use me, even my sinfulness and many imperfections, as a light in a dark world that points to You.  Amen

I would love to hear your thoughts today!

1.21.13 That They Might See!

Good morning All. Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Well, I’m sitting here trying to figure out what to share…where to start.  Ought-a-be easy, given the source of the “material”…not to mention the theme of for this series that Pastor’s leading us through…you know…”Let your light so shine before  men”…with today’s focus titled “…That they might see…!!!”  I hate to admit it, but I just didn’t connect real well with all this.  Yes, it was a wonderful service….both of them…good singin’, preachin’, prayin’ & meetin’…just didn’t click for me, today.

Not to mention, that this area of Scripture is real convicting for me.  I know for a fact, I’ve not handled the many blessings in my life as well as I should have…especially the blessings of my relationship with my wife and children…certainly not worthy of “being light”, much less being placed up on light stand….and there’s a path for me?  But why?

…and then He intervenes….Why?…because he is my Father, and He saved me through the grace – the unmerited favor- and mercy extended to me through His Son Jesus Christ. Why?...because I am His workmanship.  Why?....because He has good works for me to do.  Why?...because He wants to put me on display…the true heart of a father…my Father.

Father, please forgive my “unconnectedness” .  Thank you for your word…your faithfulness….and all the grace and mercy bestowed upon me through the living word…the true source of light – Jesus Christ.  May my light, my deeds,  my actions bring glory, honor and praise to you, Father.  Amen.

Sure would like to hear your thoughts.  Blessings on your day!

1.19.13 "Saturday Blog"

Welcome to the POG Blog! Instead of a staff person or lay leader beginning the discussion, we are asking that YOU begin the discussion on what today’s Scripture is saying to you and how it relates to Sunday’s message. Enjoy praying, digging in, sharing thoughts and responding!

Have a great Saturday!   Denise

Today’s Scripture Reading is : Psalm 51: 10-17        ENJOY!

Psalm 51:10-17

New International Reader's Version (NIRV)

10 God, create a pure heart in me. Give me a new spirit that is faithful to you. 11 Don’t send me away from you. Don’t take your Holy Spirit away from me. 12 Give me back the joy that comes from being saved by you. Give me a spirit that obeys you. That will keep me going.

13 Then I will teach your ways to those who commit lawless acts. And sinners will turn back to you. 14 You are the God who saves me. I have committed murder. Take away my guilt. Then my tongue will sing about how right you are no matter what you do. 15 Lord, open my lips so that I can speak. Then my mouth will praise you. 16 You don’t take delight in sacrifice. If you did, I would bring it. You don’t take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 The greatest sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. God, you will gladly accept a heart that is broken because of sadness over sin.

Share your thoughts!  What is God saying to you through this Scripture today?

1.18.13 God's Mission of Love!

Revelation 2: 1-5 – To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:  The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.  I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false.  I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary.  But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the works you did at first.  If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from it’s place, unless you repent. All week we've been talking about what it means to be a “city on a hill.”  A community of  “lampstands” shining light into a dark world.  Our “identity” as light is defined by our contrast to the darkness.  Our “mission” is to shine…thereby removing “darkness” (sin) and replacing it with light.

I have always felt that this meant that I was to live a life that was righteous and clean.  That if I “kept the commandments,” if I followed this long list of what not to do…then I would stand out.  Retrospectively, I can look with disappointment at my inability to execute this plan.  I’ve found that I’ve become incredibly adept at pointing out flaws in those around me and yet hopelessly unable to inspire change….both in the lives of others and in my own as well.  Oh, how my “knowledge exceeds my obedience.”

Then comes the second part of the passage….in spite of “toiling” and “enduring” the church is chastised for “abandoning the love (they) had at first”  (v. 4).  The writer goes as far as to threaten the removal of the lampstand unless the church repents.  It’s as though pursuing the mission (righteousness, purity, etc.) is only noble if covered in love.  I’m reminded of 1 Corinthians 13, the Bible’s most beautiful passage on love.  It begins by listing several traits of a Godly person (gifts of knowledge, faith, understanding, prophecy, etc.) Then Paul says that all of these things, without love, are nothing but a “noisy gong.” Without love, our goodness is nothing but an annoyance.

So how then do we stand out?  How do we shine?

There’s a song that I remember singing in church when I was little.  “They will know we are Christians by our love.”  I think that Jars of Clay has redone this song recently…but the message is so simple and so wise.  There are many things that make a Christian “different”…but love is the most obvious of them all.  Love shines brightest.

I find it interesting that the Bible lists love first when describing the “fruit of the Spirit.”  In fact, the first 3 “fruits” are all internal.  (love, joy, peace…) I think for that reason Delton said that “shining is not optional.” As God transforms us (Phil 1:6), we become helpless to do anything but shine. That feels freeing to me.

Obviously there is more to the story…patience, kindness, goodness…they matter, too.  But it’s comforting to know, that our Savior, started this whole process off by loving us first.  (1 John 4:19).  It’s as if He knew that ultimately, this mission would shine the sin out of our lives.  We would become more holy and pure.  Our behaviors would change and we would be different.

But He also knew that the path to God’s glory starts with loving people.  It is through loving people that the mission is accomplished.  And thus was the commandment to the Church at Ephesus…remember to love.

Mission first, people always.

011613 - Identity that gives purpose...

Please begin with prayer for an open heart, before you read the passage below. 1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I recently polled the Sr. High youth with the following question---If you could ask God any question and get an answer, what would you ask Him?  The kids responded with amazing honesty (and seriousness!!!) and I was able to put the questions into about 5-6 groups.  The largest group of questions all related to the concept of purpose---Why was I created?  What is my purpose on Earth?  Am I doing what you planned for me?  If we are honest with ourselves, we all have wondered this at some point or another in our journey or are still trying to understand our purpose in life.

The verses above really speak to identity---‘ you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God’---Notice that the passage doesn’t stop there---‘that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’  God’s desire for us is to first grasp our identity that only He can provide.  These words speak of deep value, significance, and belonging!  We typically place our value in things that will pass away, but He calls us to rest securely and firmly in who He tells us we are! First step…repent and receive identity!

Now, think about different titles of identity within our culture---boss, employee, father/mother, spouse, coach, professor, etc.  Each of these titles confers significance, but it also gives purpose and call to action.  Identity never stops in and of itself and it always has purpose associated with it!  If we do not see purpose in our identity, then I don’t think we have truly understood and received the identity God so deeply desires for us to receive.

The same is true within the family of God.  He wants us to receive our identity as children and then to understand and live out the purpose He has for us.  One of His main purposes is that we ‘may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light!’  This relates to Sunday’s message of being salt, light, a lamp, a city on a hill.  We are radically changed and then live this way among all the darkness in this world.  We show the light that we have received and people see the Father through us and come to know Him.  Then, they receive identity, which gives purpose, to share the amazing love God has for us in Christ!

The Apostle Paul is an example of this change from dark to light, inheriting identity, and living in purpose.  In 1 Timothy 2:3-7 he writes, This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransomfor all men—the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.’ This passages shows God’s heart and Paul receiving this purpose and acting on it.  Brothers and sisters, let us receive the identity in Christ and then follow the purpose that God gives to each of His children---to be salt, to be light, to be a lamp, to be a city on a hill and proclaim our God, through word and deed, to all those we encounter!

How do the concepts of identity and purpose speak to you?  Are you living with purpose?  Is it in line with God’s purpose?  How would you know?  We pray for receptive and responsive hearts that the Spirit guides and directs!  I would love to hear your journey and how this passage impacted you.

1-15-2013 Not Ashamed of the Gospel!

Welcome to the PoG Blog!  Before reading the scripture, please pray the Holy Spirit will guide and direct your meditation on God’s word. Romans 1:16 - 17

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[a] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[b]

Pastor Delton reminded us Sunday that God is not ashamed of us, but empowers us to be on display.  We’re not ashamed of his message either.  The gospel (good news or God’s news) is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.

I am drawn to the words “power of God”.  Power is so critical to us.  I think of the phrase made popular years ago: “I’ve got the power!”.  I need power to live, power to love, power to give, power to share, etc.  Paul’s words in Romans say to me that the gospel IS God’s power.  It is the power I so desperately need so that I will not only survive, but thrive.  It is for that reason that I will not be ashamed…

Please feel free to share your thoughts as you are moved by the Holy Spirit.

1-14-2013 Jesus Doesn’t Need Fans, He Needs Followers!

Please find a quiet place to focus on God for a few minutes, asking His Spirit to speak to your heart, and in Jesus’ name, ridding your heart and mind of distractions, burdens, guilt, worry, etc. Today’s scripture is Matthew 5:14-16

The Message (MSG)

14-16 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

As Pastor unfolded these verses in his message this morning, a statement he made hit me square in the face.  “Jesus doesn’t need fans, he needs followers!”  For many decades, I was a faithful “fan”, attending church on Sunday morning, getting involved in my church where my gifts led me, and asking my family to do the same.

When it was “safe”, I was there cheering Jesus on (not shouting or raising my hands – that was not acceptable in my world), but following the rules as I had been taught.  Now, none of this behavior is wrong – I’m just now understanding that these activities are only the beginning of a close relationship with my Savior.

In these verses, he’s telling me to share Him, His love, His grace, His forgiveness.

To “go public” - not hide in my safe church at worship but share Him wherever I am – “on a hill”!

To “be light” - not listen to the concerns of my family and friends and say “I’ll be praying for you”, but to stop and actually pray WITH them that instant!

To “keep open house” – not run inside my house when I get home from work, but get to know my neighbors and do life with them.

To “be generous” – not just give my monthly offering to POG, but offer more when the need arises, and not just money, but to be generous with my time.

To “open up to others” – not selfishly hoard this most wonderful gift of love, and grace and favor from the Creator of the universe, but when someone asks me about the hope I have, to share!

These old habits of being “just a fan” challenge me daily.  The fact that He directly tells me in these verses “you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?” reminds me that He created me (Acts 17:26) at this time, in this place, in this universe to be His messenger – a shy, a overweight, graying, wrinkling me?  Yes!  I’m a daughter of God, His princess!

Heavenly Father, help me to remember to intentionally follow you as I go through my everyday life.  You don’t make junk – you have said in your Word that you have made me to share You especially with the people in this place, in this time.  Fill me with your Spirit, and give me the actions and words to communicate Your Light!  Amen.

1.12.13 "Saturday's Blog"

Welcome to the POG Blog! Instead of a staff person or lay leader beginning the discussion, we are asking that YOU begin the discussion on what today’s Scripture is saying to you and how it relates to Sunday’s message. Enjoy praying, digging in, sharing thoughts and responding!

Have a great Saturday!   Denise

Today’s Scripture Reading is from the NIV and The Message Versions      ENJOY!

Psalm 23  ( NIV )

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd,(A) I lack nothing.(B)     He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,(C)     he refreshes my soul.(D) He guides me(E) along the right paths(F) for his name’s sake.(G) Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[a](H) I will fear no evil,(I) for you are with me;(J) your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table(K) before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil;(L) my cup(M) overflows. Surely your goodness and love(N) will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23  ( THE MESSAGE)

1-3 God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction.

Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure.

You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing.

Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life.

Share your thoughts!  What is God saying to you through this Scripture today?

1.11.13 "Resisting the Light"

Today’s Scripture is:  John 3: 16-21 (MSG) 16-18 “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.

19-21 “This is the crisis we’re in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.”

I copied The Message version of this scripture down, because I like the words that are used to describe the vastness between living under the freedom of the Good News of Jesus as opposed to living enslaved to darkness without Him.

Pastor’s message last Sunday reminded me how bent toward darkness we are... just naturally.   Why does depression and darkness so quickly overtake me when God so lovingly gives me a way out every moment of every day?   Why is it so hard to live under that stream of light that God always has available for me?   And why, even though I’m a Christian and love the Lord, do I want to run for the darkness when things get tough?  I really don’t understand why there seems to be comfort in hiding or escaping, rather than running to the Light.. to the One who can truly save me from the depression, or sadness, or problems that I face.  Does anyone else know how this feels?  Then I become even more ashamed because as a Jesus Follower, I’m not epiphanizing (pastor’s word) anyone... I’m not a light shiner-oner to those around me.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot this week, because of Pastor’s message and because it’s been a tough week for me spiritually. There’s been things happening in life and family that are challenging.   I haven’t lost faith or trust that God is present, working, intervening, or loving -  I’ve just not felt it.   I guess that’s where the trust comes in.... it’s not about feelings - it’s about faith.   But even in the midst of the faith - I’ve felt a desire to run and hide... to not pray... to not read the Word... to not worship.  To me... that’s darkness.   I know God doesn’t want me there, hasn’t put me there,  and wants me in the light.   And in reality as I’m typing and processing this (with those of you who are reading), I know that His Light... the Light of Life and freedom from darkness, lives IN me.  I don’t have to seek it out or find it... I HAVE it.   I think it’s about me accessing it.. surrendering to it..not fighting it.    That actually makes some sense to me - stop fighting, stop resisting, relax, open up, receive the Light and all that comes with Him.

I want to work and live in truth and reality that welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.”  Lord please help me to surrender to You.. to Your Life and Light that lives in me.. free for me to receive every moment.  Help me to resist the temptation to run to the darkness, to hide, and to resist the light when I need it so badly.  Forgive me for being weak in this area, and thank you for your forgiveness.  Teach me to turn from those tendencies and to live with openness and availability and a “Light’s ON” life.      Amen.

Thanks for letting me be vulnerable today.  How did this scripture speak to you?  I would love to hear your thoughts....

1.10.13 "Definitely NOT"

“For You alone – my soul waits – hushed.”  “Open my eyes and ears and heart to Your Voice today, God.” “What do you want to talk to me about, today, Papa?” Today’s Scripture is John 8:12

“I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” (NIV)

“I am the world’s Light. No one who follows Me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”  (MSG)

My husband gave me a new Bible for Christmas.  (He also built me a chicken coop – but that is an entirely different blog!)  This is a Study Bible that has meanings of Greek and Hebrew words.  I used it to study today’s verse in John 8 and it again gave some wonderful insight that I want to share with you.  (It is the NASB version)

“I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness but shall have the light of life.”

The Study Bible explained that the Greek word, “follows” is a present participle, which means that it is a continuous or repeated action.   The definitions include:  as a road; to be in the same way with; to accompany, especially as a disciple; to go with; to be or become the disciple of anyone as to faith and practice; to follow His teaching.

It noted that  “not walk” is an emphatic future negative; indicated by a negative particle “not” which indicates a strong future negative; “DEFINITELY NOT.”

And the meanings for the word “darkness” were dimness; obscuring; the absence of light.

So to plug all of this into the verse ….

“I (Jesus) am the Light of the world. He who follows Me…   follows – continuous, repeated following. The time I followed Jesus back in Sunday School or VBS may have been a “first” time that I followed Jesus, but it didn’t just stop there.  I have been following Him ever since.  In College; on Retreats when I experience a “high” with God; in Marriage; during sermons; but then even during mundane – normal routine kind of days.  And I will continue to follow Him for eternity!  We are “in the same way” with Jesus; “following” Him as a disciple; “going with” Him; it is a continuous, ongoing, repeated action.

...shall not walk in the darkness… I like this "emphatic future negative" business!  As I follow Jesus I can know with confidence that I will DEFINITELY NOT walk in the darkness!  I don’t have to ever fear walking in the darkness anymore!  It doesn’t say “maybe” or “sort of” or “sometimes”  it says DEFINITELY NOT!

Oh what reassurance the Savior – the Light -  has given us!

I was trying to think of an application for this in my life.  My Aunt Pat is nearing the end of her earthly life.  Cancer has returned to her for the third time and now the battle is nearly over.  No more chemo.  No more radiation.  She is bedridden, in much pain, and is in Hospice care.   As her struggle came into my mind, I thought that applying our verse today to her situation meant something like:  “Aunt Pat is in darkness.  She is dying.  She needs only to look to the Light – Jesus – and follow Him into eternity.”

Which is mostly true.  EXCEPT THE PART ABOUT THE DARKNESS!

God changed my thoughts about this darkness stuff…  Aunt Pat is already is a follower of Jesus. She has been following the Light for many years.  Jesus says, “He who follows Me shall definitely not walk in the darkness but will have the Light of Life.”  So, wouldn’t that mean that dying of cancer does not mean she is in darkness…?  NO!  She is dying of cancer –but that does not equal darkness.  Not with Jesus.  DEFINITELY NOT!  Even on her death bed, she is flooded with His Light!  I cannot imagine how "dark" this illness is.  But it does not overpower the Light of the World

Is this what You are saying to me today, Papa? Are You teaching me to stop thinking of my circumstances and problems as “darkness”?  Because with You – there is definitely no darkness – no matter how “dark” my circumstances seem?

How about you?  We will face horrible circumstances like unemployment, illness, loneliness, financial worry, broken vehicles, death, etc.   Could God be teaching us that those circumstances do not equal darkness?

“He who follows Me – the Light of the World - shall not walk in the darkness but shall have the Light of Life.”

1.9.13 "The Light Got Personal!"

Welcome to the POG Blog! The scripture for today is from John 1!

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I am finding that this light vs. dark metaphor that God uses in scripture is very helpful to me! I liked it in Star Wars too!  This metaphor was the basis of the whole movie!

This is a powerful section using that metaphor!  A couple of things caught my attention!

1) This true light can be missed!  God's light can be missed!  I can miss the light as God tries to fill me with His light to give me direction, help me work through an issue, give me peace, hope, strength!  Fact is, I can miss the light!  I don't want to miss the light!  I get to live by faith, open myself to the light, anticipate God will bring light into my life and do things like pray and worship to intentionally absorb the light!

2) I noticed also that in receiving Jesus as the light a whole world of hope and life opens up.  I get to be a child of God and act like it.  I get to be the result of a miraculous work of God being literally "born of God!"

3)  The third thing is really cool - and so refreshing to me today!  The Light became flesh.  The concept (light) became personal (flesh) in Jesus.  It is one thing to be impressed by a neat concept or metaphor that leaves you saying "thats cool" - it is quite another thing to have that conept become reality - flesh and blood reality - in a person that I can relate to, love, be loved by, talk to, listend to...!  The Light became flesh!  And I am personally connected to the Light! WOW!  That will change a person's day!

Have a great day - in and with the Light!

Please share your thoughts and insights as you read and meditate on these verses!

1.8.2013 Light that Shines in the Darkness!

As the deadline approaches for me to write this blog I feel anything but light right now, so I go to the Father, the originator of light. Tears instantly well up in my eyes.  Where do I start?  I fall on my face Lord and surrender all this darkness to you - my feelings of inadequacy, the sadness of a friend’s father dying, my “busyness” with things that shouldn't matter....dumb stupid things (now tears have stopped and grinning). The light of our Lord, Jesus Christ starts to seep in - thank You,  Jesus. Restore me in You, renew me in You.... Good morning POGers, my brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray that each of you can start over this new day, like I just did!  I couldn’t get out of the darkness of this night to hear what God wanted me to hear in today's passage of John 1: 1-5, until I went to Him.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness , and the darkness has not overcome it.

This whole “Intervention by light” didn’t start this last Sunday with the message, but started with me during Advent. God continues to remind me of how His light truly shines through Jesus for us all and that we are to receive that light and to tell others who can’t see it or can’t seem to overcome the darkness. Verse 4 and 5 hit me Sunday, during the message, but the true Epiphany came just now!

Before I surrendered and received, I read this verse and thought, “Oh, great - I hear nothing”.  Afterward, my heart is full of joy - it's truly amazing what God can do (guess it says that in verse 3 :)).  I am instantly encouraged and my mind is racing with what I want to proclaim in the Name of Jesus!!!

I loved when Pastor said, “Darkness cannot co-exist with light, just like darkness cannot overcome it” in talking about verse 5.  Something you would think I’d get but I didn’t until I experienced it.  It’s something simple I can fight the devil with.

Well, I passed up the deadline to get this in, but I won’t let that darkness seep back in cause all I can see is the LIGHT that Jesus brought with Christmas.  Lord, help me keep that alive always.

So how is your day going?  How did this passage or Sunday’s message speak to you?

1.7.13 “Go to the Light”

Today’s Reading is Matthew 2:7-12 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

As I sat listening to the message yesterday, it hit me that darkness has no source and is just the absence of light.  So darkness is the starting point, just like in Genesis 1:2-4.

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Light, on the other hand, requires a source to provide it and will guide you where you need to go.  We get daylight from the sun so we can see where we’re going physically and the light of Jesus to see where we need to go spiritually.  In fact, I’ve often wondered if the star or light that was above the manger was shining down on Christ or was His light shining up to the Father and for everyone to find their way to Him.  As you can see in the first couple of verses, Herod is the darkness and is looking for Christ so he can destroy Him.  Herod even tried to get the Magi to move to darkness by inviting them to help him find Christ.  Luckily, they were following God’s will and didn’t report to Herod where they found Christ.  If we will act as the Magi and follow God’s will in our lives He will reveal where we need to go.  We too will get to celebrate finding the child that will lead us out of darkness.

Think about the fact that these 3 wise men had traveled from the far east, probably 100’s or even 1000’s of miles, on the back of camels or maybe horses and traveled for months because of the draw of a star.  Can you imagine the anticipation the Magi must have felt when they walked up to the door of the house that the star had directed them to?  The joy they must have felt when they found out a child actually lived at this house.  They acted on complete faith that a king existed and were rewarded for it.  What would you have done in this situation?

1.5.13 "Saturday's Blog"

Welcome to the POG Blog! Instead of a staff person or lay leader beginning the discussion, we are asking that YOU begin the discussion on what today’s Scripture is saying to you and how it relates to Sunday’s message. Enjoy praying, digging in, sharing thoughts and responding!

Have a great Saturday!   Denise

Today’s Scripture Reading is:

Romans 8: 12-17

New International Version (NIV)

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(A) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(B) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(C) you will live.(D)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(E) are the children of God.(F) 15 The Spirit(G) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(H) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.”(I) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(J) that we are God’s children.(K) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(L)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(M) in order that we may also share in his glory.(N)

Share your thoughts!  What is God saying to you through this Scripture today?

1.4.13 "More than Me!"

Welcome to the PoG Blog! As we kick off the New Year, God is speaking through the Sunday message as well as the daily readings on the subject of "freedom"!  All of Galatians 5 was designated for today but for the sake of the blog, I picked out the following section!

Galatians 5 "13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

If I am hearing God correctly through these verses He is saying, "delton, freedom is not you doing what you want to do - no - freedom is you doing what my Spirit in you is leading you to do.  In that Spirit led life and way of life, delton, you will be experiencing freedom."

Is that what God is saying?

That there is a taskmaster that can put me in bondage on a daily basis more than any other and that taskmaster is "me"!

Who was it that said, "I have seen the enemy and it is I!"

I think that is what Paul means by the flesh - me in my natural, sinful, broken self - my personal default mode is my "flesh"!  But God has set me free - through the death and resurrection of Jesus my sinfulness has been redeemed and cleansed and now the Spirit of God seeks to dwell in me.  I get to receive that Spirit by faith everyday - every minute - and that Spirit in me unleashes life that is the real "me".

How does this section strike you?  What is God saying?

I like to use the following portion of a prayer to help me step into the Spirit-life everyday in a practical way!

"Holy Spirit, I honor You as my Sovereign and I yield every dimension of my spirit, soul, and body - my heart, mind and will to You and You alone to be filled with You, to walk in step with You.  Fill me afresh - restore my union with the Father and the Son, lead me in all truth, anoint me for my life and walk and calling and lead me deeper into Jesus today!"

I am free to be more than "me'!

1.3.13

Welcome to the Pog blog! It keeping with the theme of "Freedom" shared in Sunday's message we embrace the following reading for today!

Galatians 3: 26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. 4: 1What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,Father.”

It is the last line that really grabs my heart's attention today!  Let me recap a little to make sure I get what God is saying to me. I get to call the God of the universe "Abba, Father"!  (I understand 'Abba' is the most endearing, loving and relational term for approaching one's Father) Jesus has made this possible through His death and resurrection.  His sacrifice for me bought me "sonship" in the kingdom of God and because I am a "son" in the kingdom God has sent His Holy Spirit into my heart and this Holy Spirit dwelling in my heart calls out to God the Father in this most endearing, loving, safe, trusting, confident, gracefilled way - "Abba, Father!"  These words are asking me to believe this day that God the Father receives me and my prayers into His heart as He receives Jesus and His prayers!  That I get to approach my Father in heaven in the same confident, clean-slate, no guilt, fully trusting, faith-filled manner that Jesus approaches Him.

Jesus is calling me to believe this and "act' like it!

Today is one of those days I feel a load of responsibility!  I do not know exactly how to handle some of the things I am responsible for!  I feel anxious!  I believe God is asking me to deliberaty move my heart, mind, spirit and body into a place of faith and "believe" that I have an amazing Father to call out to, talk things over with and trust that He will supply all I need to follow Him this day!  In believing that - now I get to act like it!

Challenging but comforting for sure!

12.21.12.2 My Hero!!!

Woke up this morning, getting ready for my day. Hear about the 100 people in Austin who lost everything to fire and how you can help.

Hear on Good Morning America - We are still here! Oh yeah, today it was all supposed to be over according to the Mayan calendar! But yay, we are here because our God is the only one who knows when He will return. Your Will be done Father!!! Amid all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Season, yes, amid all the hard, hard things of this life. He intervenes!!!! Woo Hoo!!!

As I finish getting ready, He reminds me, I was supposed to do the Blog for today (which was supposed to be done yesterday). Ahhhhhhh, slight panic! As I start down my stairs the devil tries to creep in telling me what a loser I am. But God intervenes by the time I get down the stairs, once again stomping on that serpent's head!!! Thank You, LORD! And then I see His true Glory, lit up in the sunrise, a beautiful, amazing sunrise that was there for me to see....... and I say, “This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be Glad in it.” Psalm 118: 24

Today’s reading: Colossians 1: 13-20

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Well, I’m good to go with verse 13!!! He has rescued us from all darkness and brings His Kingdom to us through Jesus. He has rescued us rings out in my head, loud and clear! He is my Hero!!! (sorry I can’t help the exclamation points!)

The rest of the verses is the proof to me. “and in Him all things hold together” - in this new day and every day after that and into eternity. So this day, my brothers and sisters in Christ, allow Jesus to fill your hearts this day, whatever happens. He stands there waiting for the invitation, waiting to intervene into your lives. I believe that with all my heart and soul. Choose to go through this day with great JOY overflowing to others to share that Good News - God is with us and he is Supreme.

How is God your hero???

Excited beyond words in the celebration of Christ, the King,

cindy

12.21.12.1 "PEACE!"

Colossians 1:13-20For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

Well, Christmas is almost here!  The sounds, sights and smells are all around.  In the last 24 hrs I have eaten some amazing homemade sweets that were brought to the PoG office, smelled some great coffee graciously dropped off in my office, listened to the worship team practicing amazing songs of Christmas… … … and then I read the scripture above.  The heart of Christmas is just poured into my heart as I read, “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Him (Jesus), 20 and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.”

What so resonates in my heart is this reality that the true Christmas miracle is that God was “pleased” to be fully present in the person of Jesus and through Jesus to “reconcile” me with God and make “peace” between me and God through His sacrifice on the cross.  That changes everything, everything about my life!  I can live each day in line with God, in sync (although imperfectly) with Him and never alone!  I get to access this life by faith.

I have been considering the words of the angels to the shepherds, “Peace on Earth” especially in light of the stark reality that we live in a world of people that are not at peace with each other or themselves.  What is this “peace” of which the angels speak and the Apostle Paul writes.  It is a “peace” that God was pleased to bring, that cost Him His life on the cross, a “peace” that reconciles me to God.   It is a peace that "rescues me from the dominion of darkness" even though the world around me may show evidence of a lot of darkness that darkness does not have to have dominion - rule - control over me ... ... ... that is good news, really good news!

If I could wish for all of you any one thing this Christmas it would be that in a beautiful and fresh way you would receive, experience and enjoy a bold new dimension of this “peace” that is such an amazing gift, freely given to each of us and to our world of people that so desperately need it!

Merry Christmas,

Enjoy the Peace,

delton
