go for more... don't settle, Part 6 "SOUL THIRST"

SERMON NOTES:

The whole idea of “going for more”?        Luke 10:38 – 11:13

“Going for more” is asking for more life in Him, more of Him in us and more of His working in our lives .”

Luke 11 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Of all the needs we could use God’s help with why does Jesus encourage us to ask for the Holy Spirit?

John 7 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”  39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Ezekiel 47  8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.

Is my soul thirsty?

Where do I go with my soul thirst?

How do I drink from Jesus?

Awareness of “soul thirst” and knowing how to “drink” from Jesus is a revolutionary way to live!

11 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,  for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’”
Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
“So I say to you: Ask…

“Going for more” is asking for more life in Him, more of Him in us and more of His working in our lives
and world.  We get to have an effect on His “more-ness” in our lives and in the lives of others.

go for more... don't settle, Part 4 "Dealing with Doubt"

SERMON NOTES:

The whole idea of “going for more”?        Luke 10:38 – 11:13

Luke 11“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus is taking a pre-emptive strike against an enemy we each contend with in our journey of going to God for more – especially in our praying to Him as our Father!

That enemy is “doubt” … more specifically doubt in the goodness of God and His intentions towards me!

When life is painful and prayers go unanswered what lens do I look through to interpret life and God?

“Remember who I am, what I have done, how I work and who you are to Me!” – Your Father in Heaven

              God’s World –

              God’s War

              God’s Will

              God’s Word –

              God’s Worship

Matthew 11 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

2 Corinthians 4We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Luke 11 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

go for more... don't settle, Part 3 "ASK"

SERMON NOTES:

The whole idea of “going for more”?        Luke 10:38 – 11:13

Start by “asking”!

Luke 11 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

James 4 You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Why is “Asking, Seeking, Knocking” so important to a life of “more”?

              ASK is relational!

              ASK makes us vulnerable!

              ASK is intentional!

ASK leads progressively to the heart of God, His will and kingdom purposes – it’s the way things work!

“God respects us too much to ride roughshod over our free wills and loves us too much to force us
to do His bidding.
He comes where He is welcomed and waits to answer until He is called.” Pete Greig

Does ASK-ing really work?       Does ASK-ing really matter?

Luke 11 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

go for more... don't settle, Part 2 - Posture

SERMON NOTES:

The whole idea of “going for more”?        Luke 10:38 – 11:13

Start by “asking”!

Luke 11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.

Jesus is so refreshing!        His approach to “going for more” is so upside down we wind up right side up!

What’s our “going for more” posture?
              divinely r
elational,
                  humbly surrendered,
                        radically d
ependent,
                             authentically free
                                  a
llied to win,
                                      all while being shamelessly a
udacious asking for more!

Luke 11 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. ……. 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

go for more... don't settle

SERMON NOTES:

The whole idea of “more”?        Luke 10:38 – 11:13

Two hazards on the journey into “more”!      Wrong focus   &   Just settling!

Luke 10 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed— indeed only one, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Where is Luke trying lead us?

What did Martha get wrong and Mary get right?

“Martha made the mistake of thinking that she was the host and Jesus was the guest!”

What is Jesus showing us about focusing our “more”?

Jesus is the “one thing” truly needed!
He brings “divine service” pouring himself into our longing for more!
Imagine throwing your heart wide open and longing  for more and more and more of Jesus!

Luke 11 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. …….11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

What are You asking me to believe about You and about me?
