Lesson 3 – “Yahweh always wins … so let that change you!”

Exodus 14 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” 13 Moses answered, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Lesson 2 - “Say Yes to Yahweh”

Exodus - A Trust Journey, Part 2

SERMON NOTES:

The EXODUS was a defining event for God’s people then and is a refining story for God’s people now!

Trust 101: Lesson 1  - “God, You are the Hero of this story and I belong to You!”

Exodus 3 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’
“This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.

Trust 101: Lesson 2 -  “Say Yes to Yahweh”

Yahweh is

-          The Present God who calls us …… so we take off our shoes!

-          The Providing God who is powerful …….. so we follow His plan!

“The greatest threat is not our ‘No’ to Jesus but our ‘Yes’ to lesser gods!”

Exodus - A Trust Journey, Part 1

SERMON NOTES:

Why EXODUS?    Trust 101

The EXODUS was a defining event for God’s people then and is a refining story for God’s people now!

Exodus 16 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.

The Crisis

The Characters

The Hero?

Exodus 223 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

God,
You are the Hero of this story and I belong to You!

Amen

Part 3 "This Stuff Matters!"

SERMON NOTES:

Matthew 5:13-16 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot….

Giving Tangible Grace to those in vulnerable times is “who we are” as followers of Jesus and it MATTERS!

Matthew 25 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

What is Jesus saying in this parable ….. and not saying?

He is saying what sheep do because they are sheep!

He is not saying how a sheep becomes a sheep and not a goat!

What is unique about the fruits of “being a sheep” Jesus points out?

This stuff matters because LOVE matters!
Romans 12:9-21

Part 2 "Little Children!"

SERMON NOTES:

Giving Tangible Grace to those in vulnerable times is “who we are” as followers of Jesus!

Matthew 18:3-4  3 And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

·         Children are essentially needy ,unable , and dependent on others

·         Jesus redefines greatness in terms of dependence and neediness

·         "unless you become like children", unless you grasp your true neediness you will never enter the kingdom

Matthew 19:14-15 14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

·         Jesus was counter-cultural when it came to children:

He noticed them!  He valued them!

Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

·         Has nothing to do with material wealth .

·         Think of poverty in one's spirit ; a thirst for God!

What about us?

·          True greatness requires total dependence!

·         Humility is absolutely necessary to effectively and consistently bring Tangible Grace in Vulnerable Times!

"There but for the grace of God, go I"!

Part 1 "Just Notice!"

SERMON NOTES:

Giving Tangible Grace to those in a vulnerable time is “who we are” as followers of Jesus!

Matthew 5:13-16  13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Challenges to actually Notice!

·         Perception  of People

·         Distractions of Life

Luke 13:10-2112 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. 14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

Jesus Noticed and Responded with Tangible Grace!

·         He saw her with a different lens!

·         He was not Content with Intent but actually responded!

What about us?
