           6.14.26 – Sermon Notes – “The Sacraments – Baptism”

Sacra-what?

Sacrament— A “Sacred Mystery” where God is graciously active

                                                         through tangible means
coupled with His Word and promises
                                                        for our good!

 BAPTISM  ????????

(You are welcome to email in questions about Baptism and the Lord’s Supper to pog@pog.church)!

Matthew 28     18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Acts 2:36-41      36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

This passage promises that in baptism we receive:

            Forgiveness of Sins

The gift of the Holy Spirit

Inclusion in the family of God – the Church

Titus 3 4 However, when God our Savior made his kindness and love for humanity appear, 5 he saved us, but not because of anything we had done to gain his approval. Instead, because of his mercy he saved us through the washing in which the Holy Spirit gives us new birth and renewal. 6 God poured a generous amount of the Spirit on us through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Galatians 3:26-27   26You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Romans 6:3-4     We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life

In Baptism, God makes significant relational connection with a person by means of His Word coupled with water.    This is a tangible/objective activity of grace freely given for “all people” regardless of age, gender, ethnicity etc.

We are baptized in (into) the “name” of God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
It is truly one-sided He is doing all the work – we just receive by faith!

In Baptism God gives “forgiven of sins”, “recipient of the Holy Spirit”, “in Christ”, “clothed with Christ”, “child of God”, “buried with Christ, raised with Christ”, “born again”, “in His church” - IDENTITY!

Baptism is about “Who we are!” because of “Whose we are!”  In baptism we are claimed by God as His!  We are given identity, “marked” as His child which makes Him our Father in heaven who loves us very much!
Just think what that means for us!

In Baptism God applies all the benefits of Jesus’ death and resurrection to a person personally!

Baptism is the first part of Jesus’ process for making disciples.  He gives identity as a forgiven, redeemed child who is reconciled to the Father in Heaven!  This is a free gift.
The second part of the process is a lifetime of learning to obey everything Jesus taught!
We get to learn how to live as a child of God - a disciple of Jesus!

Baptism is like the doorway into God’s home, overflowing with good gifts that we need every day.
In Baptism we become legitimate members of the family with all the provision from the Father available to us.  Baptism is a one time event to be remembered everyday.

As you remember your baptism today… what does your heart, soul and life need that you have already been given in Baptism?
